Christian Education


The mission of Christian education at Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church is:

. . .to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. . . speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. —Ephesians 4:12-13, 15-16

At Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church our mission is to foster educational and growth opportunities for all ages in our shared journey of knowing and understanding God’s Word and the life and teachings of Jesus Christ; we encourage the application of this learning so that we may use it in our lives individually and together as Christians in our community.

In our commitment to this vision, the Christian Education Committee embraces the following:

Confirmation Class: young teenagers interested in joining the church.
This class offers church history, theological study, and a study of the Scrptures for those who are preparing to join the church.

Coming to the Table: children 1st -5th grade
A class led in the past by Hedge and Marilyn Hedgpeth where young children learn about and study the sacrament of Communion and experience the fellowship of being welcomed at the table.

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts: adults of all ages.
This is a new class for the fall of 2008 held on 4 consecutive Sundays in October, the 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th from 4:00pm-6:30pm. Hedge will be leading this study where members will take inventories, read Scrpture, and discuss with others their God-given abilities and gifts. Through study and discussion, members will learn where God is calling them.

Graduation Sunday: all graduates of high school, college, or graduate level work.
Held in the spring, this Sunday celebrates and honors all those who have completed the milestones of high school, college, or other graduate work.

Junior Church: children age 3-1st grade.
During worship these children are invited upstairs to participate in fellowship and study related to the Scripture texts adults are studying in worship. Coordinated by Vicki Chappell.

Kids’ Club: children 1st-5th grade.
Held on the third Sunday of the month, Kids’ Club is a fellowship opportunity provided for our children, 1st through 5th grade, where they decide on fun activities to do and local mission projects on which they can work. Meg Pisczek, leader.

Nursery: infants through age three.
Childcare provided by a professional care giver, assisted by adult church members. Mary Towell, leader.

Presbyterian Women’s Bible Study: women of all ages.
These women meet for an intergenerational study on the first Tuesday of each month, and they have begun a new study, Jubilee, on the Gospel of Luke. There are two classes, one at 10:00am with childcare, and the other at 7:00pm. Rebekah Hutto, leader.

Rally Day
Held on a Sunday at the beginning of the school year, Rally Day celebrates the start of a new year in Christian education with fellowship and activities for the whole church.

Sunday School
Adult Classes:
Bethel Bible class:
adults of all ages.
This study group meets in the comfort of the library and currently utilizes the Cook Sunday School series for its studies. Reverend Bill Chappell, leader.

Fellowship Class: adults of all ages.
Currently studying the Acts of the Apostles in the Efird Bible Study video series. Both serious and light-hearted discussions occur over coffee in this informal setting. Wade Jackson, leader.

Explorers Class: adults of all ages.
They are finishing up a study by Dietrich Bonheoffer and will soon begin a new study. Paul Laughton and Ken Jones, leaders.

Youth: grades 6-12
Held each Sunday morning upstairs in the education building. Focuses on the lectionary passages for the morning worship service. Led by Rebekah Hutto.

Children
Nursery:
infants through age 3.
Childcare provided by a professional care giver, assisted by adult church members. Mary Towell, leader.

Jubilee: ages 3-5
This class in an introduction to God through the stories of the Bible. Music, drama, stories, and play are used to help children learn about God’s people in Scripture. They are using the We Believe curriculum. Linda and John Alling and Rosita Garrett, leaders.

Noah’s Ark: K—grade 2.
An introduction to God and our world using Bible lessons, crafts and games and using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum. Meg Pisczek, leader. This class will combine for the year with the Jacob’s Ladder class.

Jacob’s Ladder: grades 3–5.
Continuation of Bible lessons, including memory verses and reading of the Scriptures using the Seasons of the Spirit curriculum. Anne Medenblik, Carol Kuykendal, Erin Jones, Laura Byrd, Eileen Lynch, leaders.

Teacher Appreciation Sunday
Held in the spring of each year, this Sunday celebrates and honors the hard work of our Sunday School teachers.

Thursday Theologians: for youth and adults.
Meets Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. for biblical and theological discussion. Leslie Wickham, leader.

Vacation Church School at New Hope Camp: ages 4 to grade 5.
A week of fun in the summer to teach the Christian faith to our children through crafts, music, games and theater. We gather with other churches at New Hope Camp. Dates next year are June 15-19, 2009.

Youth Group: grades 6–12.
Meets each Sunday night from 5:00pm-6:30pm for fellowship and discussion. yearly activities include Friday Night Live, Fall and Spring Retreats, serving dinner at Urban Ministries of Durham, outreach projects, Massanetta Middle School Retreat, mission trips, hosting receptions following each Sunday morning service and much more. Led by Rebekah Hutto, John Pormann, and assisted by various members of the church.
